Hocus Pocus, 1993

As usual with rewatching childhood films of mines, I’m not going to give a rating since I’m just watching them out for my own enjoyment. But I’m very happy to say that this is still just as great as it was when I saw it for the first time as a kid on Disney Channel on the week of Halloween.

Kenny Ortega single-handedly created a bunch of family films that shaped my childhood like the High School Musical trilogy, and he also managed to one of the best Halloween movies ever made. Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker are clearly having so much goddamn fun playing these now iconic, cartoonishly dumb and wicked witches. I also liked a lot of the practical and special effects, the three main kids were very likable and gave decent performances, and the humor still kinda worked for me, although it might be a bit dated for some.

Overall, this delightfully spooky film is truly one of a kind. Like, literally one of a kind. We, as a society, agree that there was never another movie after this…
